Hotels Mimicking Airlines: The New Business Model

Hotels Business Model

Hotels are undergoing a transformation in their business models by drawing inspiration from the airline industry. This strategic shift aims to enhance guest experiences and drive revenue growth. By adopting strategies similar to airlines, the hotel industry is evolving to meet the changing demands of modern travelers.

The implementation of surcharges and fees, a practice that airlines have utilized for years, is gaining traction in the hotel industry. These additional charges have contributed to a significant increase in hotel revenue, reaching a record $2.25 billion in 2019. By introducing surcharges for services such as early check-in, late check-out, and specific amenities, hotels are diversifying their revenue streams and optimizing profitability.

Furthermore, hotels are exploring attribute-based shopping, a concept inspired by airlines’ approach to seat selection and ancillary services. This empowers guests to personalize their hotel experience by selecting the amenities and services they value most. This customization not only enhances guest satisfaction but also presents opportunities for hotels to increase revenue through upselling and bundling valued attributes.

With the rise of mergers and acquisitions in the hotel industry, market consolidation is becoming more prevalent. Smaller hotel chains are potential targets for consolidation as larger players seek to strengthen their market share. This strategy, previously witnessed in the airline industry, allows hotels to overcome financial challenges and ensure long-term survival.

Overall, the hotel industry is transforming its business model to prioritize guest experiences and revenue optimization. By embracing strategies from the airline industry and adopting attribute-based shopping, hotels are reshaping the future of the industry.

Key Takeaways:

  • Hotels are adopting strategies from the airline industry to enhance guest experiences and increase revenue.
  • The implementation of surcharges and fees, similar to airlines, has contributed to a significant rise in hotel revenue.
  • Attribute-based shopping allows guests to personalize their hotel experience and provides opportunities for revenue optimization.
  • Mergers and acquisitions are expected to increase in the hotel industry to ensure market survival.
  • The hotel industry is shifting towards a more dynamic and guest-centric approach.

The Rise of Hotel Surcharges and Fees

In recent years, hotels have adopted a pricing strategy similar to airlines by implementing various surcharges and fees. These additional charges include fees for early check-in, late check-out, specific room preferences, and even for amenities like in-room safes. The implementation of these fees has become more widespread, contributing to the profitability of hotels.

Hotel surcharges, fees, and additional charges have become a significant source of revenue for the industry. In 2019, the total revenue generated from these add-ons reached a record $2.25 billion, representing a 6% increase from the previous year. This trend highlights the growing importance of ancillary services and hotel pricing strategies in maximizing revenue.

Examples of Hotel Surcharges and Fees:

Surcharges/Fees Description
Early Check-in Fee An additional charge for guests who wish to check in before the standard check-in time.
Late Check-out Fee An extra fee for guests who want to extend their stay beyond the regular check-out time.
Room Preference Guarantee Fee A charge for guests who want to ensure specific room preferences such as a higher floor or a view.
In-room Safe Fee An additional fee for using the in-room safe to secure valuables.

Hotels have embraced these surcharges and fees as a way to enhance revenue while offering guests a greater degree of customization and choice. By implementing additional charges, hotels can cover the costs of providing personalized services and amenities, improving the overall guest experience.

The rise of hotel surcharges and fees also has implications for travelers. It’s essential for guests to be aware of these additional charges when budgeting for their stay to avoid any surprises upon checkout.

The Benefits of Attribute-Based Shopping in Hotels

Attribute-based shopping offers a unique and personalized hotel experience for guests, allowing them to select specific attributes and amenities that align with their preferences. This customization goes beyond traditional room types and rate plans, providing guests with more control over their stay.

By implementing attribute-based shopping, hotels can optimize their revenue and improve guest satisfaction. Let’s explore the various benefits this approach brings:

  1. Enhanced Guest Satisfaction: Attribute-based shopping allows guests to tailor their hotel experience, ensuring that they receive the amenities and services they value most. This personalized approach creates a sense of value and exclusivity, resulting in higher guest satisfaction levels.
  2. Increased Revenue: By presenting guests with a range of attribute options, hotels have the opportunity to upsell and generate additional revenue. Guests may be willing to pay for add-ons or upgrades that enhance their stay, increasing the overall revenue for the hotel.
  3. Improved Operational Efficiency: Attribute-based shopping enables hotels to efficiently manage their inventory and allocate resources based on guest preferences. This optimization of resources leads to improved operational efficiency, reducing waste and increasing profitability.

attribute-based shopping in hotels

Additionally, attribute-based shopping allows hotels to bundle valued attributes and services, providing guests with attractive options that suit their needs. This bundling approach can further enhance the overall guest experience, driving customer loyalty and repeat bookings.

In conclusion, attribute-based shopping not only benefits guests by providing a personalized and tailored hotel experience but also enables hotels to optimize their revenue and operational efficiency. By embracing this approach, hotels can stay competitive in the ever-evolving hospitality industry.

Potential Mergers and Acquisitions in the Hotel Industry

The economic downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic has led to a depletion of revenue for many hotel companies. As a result, industry experts predict a wave of mergers and acquisitions in the hotel industry to increase market share and ensure survival. This strategy has been previously seen in the airline industry after the last recession, where airlines combined forces to overcome financial challenges.

Smaller hotel chains, such as Wyndham Hotels & Resorts and Choice Hotels, are considered potential targets for consolidation. However, even larger hotel players like Marriott, Hilton, and Hyatt could engage in mergers to strengthen their positions in the market.

Hotel Chains Market Share
Marriott International 14.1%
Hilton Worldwide Holdings 8.8%
InterContinental Hotels Group 5.4%
AccorHotels 5.0%
Choice Hotels International 2.7%

Consolidation and mergers can help hotel chains expand their market share and achieve economies of scale. It allows them to streamline operations, reduce costs, and leverage their collective strengths to navigate through uncertain times. By joining forces, hotel companies can also benefit from shared resources, expertise, and distribution networks.

However, mergers and acquisitions in the hotel industry also raise concerns about reduced competition and potential monopolistic practices. As hotel chains consolidate, it becomes crucial for regulatory bodies to ensure fair competition and protect consumer interests.

Overall, the potential for mergers and acquisitions signals the hotel industry’s commitment to survival and adapting to the changing market dynamics. With the right strategic partnerships, hotel chains can overcome financial challenges, strengthen their positions, and emerge stronger in a post-pandemic world.

The Financial Benefits of Attribute-Based Shopping

Attribute-based shopping is not only beneficial for enhancing guest experiences, but it also offers significant financial advantages for hotels. By allowing guests to customize their stay and pay for specific attributes, hotels can tap into increased revenue streams and improve their profitability.

One of the key benefits of attribute-based shopping is its potential to generate increased hotel revenue. When guests have the opportunity to personalize their experience and choose amenities that they value, they are more likely to make bookings and spend more during their stay. This leads to higher conversion rates and a boost in overall hotel revenue.

Furthermore, attribute-based shopping allows hotels to optimize their pricing strategy. By offering valued attributes at a premium price, hotels can maximize their revenue potential. This dynamic pricing approach ensures that guests are willing to pay a premium for the specific features they desire, resulting in improved hotel profitability.

In addition, the ability to dynamically assign rooms based on attribute preferences further contributes to increased hotel revenue. Hotels can strategically allocate rooms with desirable attributes to guests willing to pay for them, maximizing the utilization of their inventory and driving revenue growth.

Overall, attribute-based shopping provides hotels with a powerful tool to attract guests, increase revenue, and improve profitability. By offering personalized experiences, optimizing pricing strategies, and dynamically assigning rooms, hotels can achieve higher conversion rates, improved financial performance, and a competitive edge in the industry.

The Implications for Direct Bookings and Online Travel Agencies (OTAs)

With the implementation of attribute-based shopping, hotels now have the opportunity to attract more direct bookings and leverage their competitive advantage over Online Travel Agencies (OTAs). By offering flexibility, better value, and improved guest satisfaction, hotels can entice travelers to book directly through their websites.

Direct hotel bookings provide several benefits for both hotels and guests. Firstly, booking directly gives guests access to exclusive deals, promotions, and loyalty programs that are not available through OTAs. This enables guests to enjoy a more personalized experience and receive tailored offers based on their preferences.

For hotels, direct bookings reduce reliance on OTAs, saving on commission fees and improving profitability. Hotels can take advantage of the direct relationship with guests, allowing them to gather valuable data and insights that can be used for targeted marketing campaigns and personalized communication.

By embracing direct bookings, hotels can maintain a stronger relationship with their guests throughout the entire booking process and stay. This fosters a sense of loyalty and encourages repeat bookings, ultimately driving revenue growth.

The rise of attribute-based shopping further challenges OTAs, as hotels gain greater control over their inventory and the ability to deny attribute-based shopping to these external platforms. Hotel distribution channels are shifting, and hotels are becoming more independent and self-reliant in managing their online presence.

Hotels can optimize their websites to highlight the unique advantages of booking directly, such as price transparency, flexibility in room selection, and direct communication with hotel staff. By emphasizing their website’s user-friendly interface and secure payment options, hotels can instill confidence in guests and encourage them to make direct bookings.

Advantages of Direct Hotel Bookings:

  • Access to exclusive deals, promotions, and loyalty programs
  • Personalized experience based on guest preferences
  • Reduced reliance on OTAs and commission fees
  • Increased profitability and revenue growth
  • Stronger relationship with guests and improved guest satisfaction

It is crucial for hotels to invest in their websites and online presence to stay competitive in the evolving landscape. By continuously optimizing their online booking process, hotels can secure a larger share of direct bookings and maintain control over their distribution channels.

However, it is important for hotels to strike a balance between direct bookings and OTA partnerships. While direct bookings offer numerous advantages, OTAs still play a significant role in reaching a wider audience and attracting international travelers. The key is to find the right balance and leverage both direct bookings and OTA partnerships to maximize revenue and guest satisfaction.

Conclusion

The hotel industry is undergoing a significant transformation, inspired by the business model of the airline industry and driven by the adoption of attribute-based shopping. This strategic shift is focused on enhancing guest experiences, optimizing hotel revenue, and ensuring long-term competitiveness in the industry.

By implementing surcharges and fees, hotels have successfully increased their revenue potential. These additional charges, similar to those employed by airlines, have become more widespread and harder to avoid. As a result, the hotel industry generated a record $2.25 billion in additional revenue in 2019 alone.

Another key aspect of this business model transformation is the customization of the guest experience through attribute-based shopping. By offering a range of options for guests to choose from, hotels can tailor their services and amenities to individual preferences. This not only improves guest satisfaction but also enables hotels to upsell additional amenities and increase revenue.

As the hotel industry continues to evolve, it is clear that the future belongs to a more dynamic and guest-centric business model. The adoption of strategies from the airline industry, the implementation of surcharges, and the embrace of attribute-based shopping are just the beginning. The hotel industry is poised to reshape its future by prioritizing guest experience enhancement, revenue optimization, and overall industry competitiveness.

Personalization in Hospitality: The Travel Trend

Hospitality Personalization

Welcome to the era of personalized hotel experiences and customer-centric hospitality! In today’s fast-paced world, where individuals seek unique and tailored experiences, the hospitality industry is embracing personalization as a key strategy to win the hearts and loyalty of guests. Personalization in hospitality refers to the process of tailoring content, messages, offers, and services to suit a guest’s lifestyle, preferences, and requirements.

According to the 2023 State of Personalization report by Twilio, a staggering 56% of consumers are likely to become repeat buyers after a personalized experience. This rings especially true for younger generations such as Millennials and Gen Z, who exhibit even higher percentages of repeat buying behavior after personalization. Tailored offers not only make us feel special, but they also save us time and simplify our decision-making process. It’s no wonder that personalization in the hospitality industry can deliver an 8x return on investment (ROI) on marketing spend and increase sales by at least 10%.

Key Takeaways:

  • Personalization in hospitality involves tailoring content, messages, offers, and services to suit a guest’s lifestyle and preferences.
  • 56% of consumers are likely to become repeat buyers after experiencing personalization.

  • Younger generations, such as Millennials and Gen Z, are particularly responsive to personalized experiences.
  • Personalization saves time and simplifies the decision-making process for guests in the hospitality industry.

The Importance of Personalization in Hospitality

Personalization is a crucial aspect of the hospitality industry, as it strives to enhance the customer experience and establish strong, long-term relationships between guests and brands. Today, personalization extends beyond offline interactions that occur upon arrival, and it can be implemented at various stages of the customer journey.

By leveraging personalization techniques, hospitality businesses can create tailored travel experiences that meet the unique preferences and needs of individual guests. This level of customization not only adds a personal touch but also streamlines the decision-making process and saves valuable time for travelers.

In fact, according to the 2023 State of Personalization report by Twilio, 56% of consumers are more likely to become repeat buyers after experiencing personalized services. The report also highlights that younger generations, such as Millennials and Gen Z, show even higher repeat buyer percentages after personalization.

Personalization in the hospitality industry has the potential to deliver an 8x return on investment (ROI) on marketing spend and boost sales by at least 10%. It is a powerful tool for attracting and retaining customers, creating a competitive edge, and driving business growth.

To fully capitalize on the benefits of personalization, hotels and other establishments need to go beyond offering basic customization. The State of Personalization Maturity in Travel and Dining report by Incisiv and Adobe reveals that many traditional travel businesses, including those in hospitality, currently only provide limited personalization options.

To exceed guest expectations and achieve better business outcomes, hotels must strive to move up the personalization maturity scale. This involves implementing advanced personalization strategies and embracing technologies that enable tailored experiences throughout the entire customer journey.

Personalized Experiences Across the Customer Journey

Personalization in the hospitality industry encompasses various touchpoints and channels. Here are a few key areas where personalization can be applied:

  1. Targeted Email Advertising: Sending customized email campaigns that resonate with individual preferences and interests.
  2. Unique Landing Pages: Creating personalized landing pages based on specific customer segments or individual characteristics.
  3. Tailored Product Offers: Providing relevant product recommendations and promotions based on customer preferences and past behavior.
  4. Omnichannel Customer Service: Offering a seamless and consistent customer service experience across multiple channels, such as phone, chat, email, and social media.
  5. Conversational Chatbots: Deploying AI-powered chatbots that can engage in personalized conversations and provide real-time assistance.
  6. Push Notifications: Sending targeted push notifications to keep guests informed about personalized offers, upgrades, or special amenities.
  7. Individualized Loyalty Programs: Designing loyalty programs that recognize and reward guests based on their individual preferences and frequent stays.

By employing personalized strategies at each stage of the customer journey, hotels can create memorable experiences, foster stronger connections with guests, and differentiate themselves from competitors.

The Personalization Maturity Curve

The personalization maturity curve is a framework that outlines the different stages of personalization in the hospitality industry. It ranges from no personalization to hyper-personalization, with each stage offering varying levels of tailored experiences for guests.

No Personalization

At the initial stage of the maturity curve, hotels provide the same marketing emails, online content, and discounts to all customers. There is no customization based on individual preferences or characteristics.

Basic Personalization

Basic personalization involves adding personal insertions, such as customer names, in marketing emails and notifications. Hotels begin to segment their audience into broad groups based on shared characteristics, allowing for some level of targeted messaging.

Segment-based Personalization

In the segment-based personalization stage, hotels divide their target audience into smaller groups based on demographics, interests, or previous interactions. This enables more precise targeting and tailored offers for each segment.

Microsegmentation

Microsegmentation takes personalization a step further by creating highly targeted offers for smaller groups or even individuals. This stage relies on real-time data and predictive analytics to understand and anticipate customer preferences and needs.

Hyper-personalization

The highest stage on the personalization maturity curve is hyper-personalization. Hotels at this stage offer truly individualized experiences, crafting unique offers and services for each guest based on their real-time behavior, preferences, and historical data.

As hotels move up the personalization maturity scale, they unlock numerous benefits. Higher levels of personalization lead to improved conversion rates, increased revenue per visitor, and higher average order value. By fully embracing personalization, hotels can drive business growth and enhance the overall guest experience.

Building Blocks of Personalization

Personalization in the hospitality industry relies on several key building blocks to create tailored experiences for guests. These building blocks include comprehensive guest profiles, granular inventory, trip context, and personalized pricing.

Comprehensive Guest Profiles

To achieve personalization, hotels need to have comprehensive guest profiles. This can be accomplished by utilizing a customer relationship management (CRM) platform. A CRM allows hotels to track customer activities, preferences, and behaviors, enabling them to understand individual guests on a deeper level. With detailed guest profiles, hotels can provide personalized recommendations, offers, and services that align with each guest’s unique needs and preferences.

Granular Inventory

Having granular inventory is crucial to offer a wide range of room options and deliver highly personalized advertising messages. By categorizing rooms based on various attributes such as view, size, amenities, and accessibility, hotels can present guests with tailored options that best match their preferences. This level of personalization enhances the guest experience by providing them with choices that align with their specific requirements.

Trip Context

Understanding a guest’s preferences and requirements during their stay is essential for delivering a highly personalized experience. This is where trip context comes into play. Hotels can capture real-time data about guest interactions, activities, and feedback to gain insights into their preferences and needs. By analyzing this data, hotels can anticipate guest expectations and provide personalized recommendations and services throughout their stay, creating a seamless and memorable experience.

Personalized Pricing

Personalized pricing is another important aspect of hospitality personalization. By considering a traveler’s needs and adjusting rates accordingly, hotels can offer tailored pricing options that meet guests’ budgets and expectations. This can be achieved through dynamic pricing strategies that take into account factors such as travel dates, length of stay, booking history, and preferences. Personalized pricing not only enhances the guest experience but also helps hotels optimize revenue by offering competitive rates customized to each guest’s profile.

By integrating these building blocks into their operations, hotels can deliver comprehensive personalized experiences that truly cater to the individual needs and preferences of their guests. From tailored recommendations and amenities to customized pricing options, personalization in hospitality elevates the guest experience to new heights.

Personalization Beyond the Digital Space

While personalization in the digital space is important, delivering a personalized in-person customer experience is equally crucial. Research shows that in-person customer experience is the number two driver of personalization ROI. Airlines and hotels are using in-flight personalization strategies to tailor the in-flight experience based on traveler preferences. Marriott International hotels surprise and delight guests by following their social media accounts and delivering personalized surprises. Cruise lines are also adopting personalization by allowing passengers to enter their preferences for meals, drinks, and entertainment via mobile apps. Providing personalized experiences throughout the entire customer journey can help differentiate brands and drive customer loyalty.

Marriott International takes personalization to another level, making guests feel truly special. By surprising guests with personalized gifts based on their social media accounts, they create moments that leave a lasting impression. This attention to detail enhances the overall customer experience and builds a strong brand reputation.

Cruise lines are embracing personalization by allowing passengers to customize their preferences for meals, drinks, and entertainment via mobile apps. This enables guests to have a more tailored and enjoyable experience onboard, ensuring customer satisfaction and loyalty.

The Power of In-Person Personalization

While digital personalization is essential for enhancing customer experience, the power of in-person personalization should not be underestimated. By going the extra mile to deliver personalized experiences, hotels, airlines, and cruise lines can create lasting memories and establish themselves as customer-centric brands. Personalized service and attention to detail throughout the entire customer journey can set businesses apart from their competitors and foster long-term loyalty.

Benefits of In-Person Personalization

  • Creates a unique and unforgettable experience for guests
  • Builds strong emotional connections with customers
  • Generates positive word-of-mouth referrals
  • Increases customer satisfaction and loyalty
  • Enhances brand reputation and differentiation

Future Trends in Personalization

In the rapidly evolving landscape of the hospitality industry, personalization is becoming an essential ingredient for success. From the integration of AI and machine learning to the rise of ecosystems and subscription services, the future of personalization holds exciting possibilities.

AI and Machine Learning in Personalization

Advancements in AI and machine learning are revolutionizing the personalization landscape. These technologies enable hotels to analyze vast amounts of data, including customer preferences, behaviors, and past interactions, to create highly personalized experiences. With AI-powered algorithms, hotels can quickly find the best flights, hotels, and activities for individual travelers, offering tailored recommendations and competitive prices. This level of personalization not only enhances the customer experience but also increases customer satisfaction and loyalty.

Ecosystems for Personalized Journeys

Personalization is no longer limited to the hotel stay but extends into partner ecosystems, creating a seamless and personalized journey for travelers. By collaborating with restaurants, clubs, shops, and other local establishments, hotels can offer guests a comprehensive and tailored experience. For example, a hotel can partner with a local museum to offer exclusive access and discounts to guests who have shown an interest in art. By leveraging these ecosystems, hotels can provide a holistic and customized travel experience that goes beyond the traditional boundaries.

Benefits of Ecosystem Personalization:
Enhanced guest experience
Increased customer loyalty
Opportunity for revenue sharing with partners
Strengthens local community ties

Subscription Services

Subscription services are gaining popularity in the hospitality industry as a means of delivering personalized experiences over time. Hotels can offer subscription-based packages tailored to the individual needs and preferences of guests. These packages can include recurring benefits such as room upgrades, personalized amenities, and exclusive access to events or services. By adopting a subscription model, hotels can foster long-term relationships with customers and create a sense of exclusivity and loyalty.

“In a world where personalization is becoming the norm, AI and machine learning, ecosystems, and subscription services are the driving forces shaping the future of personalized experiences in the hospitality industry.”

The future of personalization in the hospitality industry is exciting and promising. As hotels continue to embrace these future trends, they will be able to create unparalleled experiences for their guests, build lasting relationships, and maintain a competitive edge in the evolving market.

Conclusion

Personalization is a crucial strategy for hotels in the modern hospitality industry. By implementing personalized experiences and leveraging technologies such as AI and machine learning, hotels can create unique and tailored offerings for their guests. This not only enhances the customer experience but also drives customer loyalty and increases revenue.

While personalization has traditionally focused on digital interactions, the importance of in-person experiences should not be overlooked. In fact, providing personalized in-person experiences has been found to be a significant driver of personalization ROI. Hotels can go beyond the digital space by incorporating personalization throughout the entire customer journey, creating memorable moments that set them apart from the competition.

Looking ahead, future trends in personalization include the use of ecosystems and subscription services. Ecosystems will enable hotels to extend personalization beyond their own offerings and collaborate with partner establishments such as restaurants, clubs, and shops. Additionally, subscription services allow hotels to provide increasingly personalized experiences to customers over time, further enhancing customer loyalty and satisfaction.

To maintain a competitive edge in the ever-evolving travel industry, hotels should continue to prioritize the development and improvement of their personalization strategies. By embracing personalization and keeping up with emerging trends, hotels can create unforgettable experiences for their guests and solidify their position as leaders in the industry.

The Rise of Sleep Tourism: Finding Rest in Idyllic Destinations

Sleep Tourism

Welcome to the world of sleep tourism, the latest trend in travel that allows weary travelers to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and embark on a journey of rest and rejuvenation. In an era where stress and sleep deprivation have become all too common, more and more people are realizing the importance of prioritizing quality sleep and taking the time to recharge their mind and body.

According to a study, a staggering 71% of adults in the UK do not get the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep, leading to a range of issues including low mood, lack of concentration, and decreased productivity. In response to this growing need for restful sleep, the travel industry has stepped up its game by offering sleep-focused amenities and destinations designed to promote deep relaxation and peaceful slumber.

From sleep retreats nestled in serene natural settings to hotels that provide personalized pillow menus and state-of-the-art smart mattresses, sleep tourism offers a wide variety of options for those seeking a blissful sleep vacation. These destinations allow travelers to disconnect from technology, minimize screen time, and develop healthy sleep habits that can have lasting benefits for their overall well-being.

It’s important to note that while sleep retreats can provide a much-needed break and improve sleep quality, they may not be a permanent solution for long-term sleep issues or serious sleep disorders like insomnia. Developing healthy sleep habits requires consistency and dedication, and sleep tourism can be a wonderful starting point on that journey.

Key Takeaways:

  • Sleep tourism is a growing trend, offering travelers a chance to prioritize rest and relaxation.
  • The travel industry is incorporating sleep-focused amenities and destinations to promote better sleep.
  • Sleep retreats can provide temporary relief and promote healthy sleep habits.

Travel destinations to combine both science and discovery

For some, holidays rhyme with relaxation, sun, and beach. For others, it is an opportunity to develop a passion or discover new horizons. For these people, there are many possibilities for scientific stays.

All year-round, it’s subway, work, and sleep every day. And when it’s finally time for a holiday, more than just rest, you want to take a step back? Take advantage of this free time to broaden your horizons and enrich your life? Then scientific stays are for you. Especially since there is something for every taste and every budget. Discovery of astronomy or nature, computer science or history. In a highly organized group or in a more independent way. And even a few cheap stays, but which are worth their weight in discoveries.

Norway: the spectacle of nature

A little like that, but if you feel more contemplative about your soul, a stay in the Far North hoping to see the Northern Lights seems appropriate. Hopefully”, because, we must be aware that we will not admire the Northern Lights, it is the Northern Lights that come to honor us with their visit.

But between September and May, it is possible to surprise one or the other, on the northern Norwegian side, for example. And some cruises, in particular, allow you to put all the chances on your side and to attend this magnificent spectacle of nature, all in shapes and lights, in a hypnotizing silence.

France: head in the stars

For those who like stars, countless stays offer an introduction — or improvement — to astronomy. Whether you are rather observant, with your eye glued to the telescope, an engineer, with the desire to design your rocket or simply scientific, driven by the need to understand how our universe works, there is something for everyone. Without having to leave French soil this time.

Like many other themed trips, Astro trips can be aimed at children, even small children, adults or a family audience, with always the main objective: to dream!

Mexico: in the footsteps of an ancient civilization

Whether you like history or want to return to your roots, there are several destinations that you can’t miss. Italy, the cradle of Roman civilization, of course. Classic Egypt and its pyramids. Or Greece and its countless archaeological sites.

Some agencies also offer some stays in Mexico, in the footsteps of the Mayan civilization. It will be an opportunity to discover unique archaeological sites and one of the strongest and ingenious cultures that have ever lived on Earth. It may also be an opportunity, depending on the formula chosen, to marvel at the exotic fauna and flora in your eyes.

Canada: A wild country

If you are looking to get closer to wildlife, considering walking in the footsteps of the wolf may be right for you. Especially since some agencies offer, in this context, to integrate you into research programs: in Canada, for example, along the Saint Laurent River.

In the Mauricie National Park of Canada, it is possible to test animal monitoring techniques in the field. To monitor the wolf’s evolution from a distance, without disturbing it to share a little of its life with the highest respect.

A trip to Indonesia: Java and it’s Amazing fragrances!

The most populated island in the Indonesian archipelago has a sense of power and serenity. Fuming volcanoes fertilize cascades of rice fields while the gods watch over the fabulous temples of Borobudur and Prambanan.

The rhythm of life and the landscapes are gentle, the richness, both natural and architectural, are apparent.

Borobudur at dawn

Despite great affluence from daybreak, Borobudur appears as a paradise in comparison. The great Buddhist temple nestled in the middle of the jungle was abandoned around the year 1000, two hundred years after its construction. It is due to the struggles with the Hindus, but also volcanic eruptions, especially the smoking Merapi illuminated by the first rays of sunlight.

The voices are silent to capture this moment of eternity and the awakening of the birds, the cameras crackle! As the call of the muezzins resonates, everyone seeks the perfect alignment between the meditating Buddhas, stupas, and light on the surrounding peaks. Who would suspect that this gigantic stone mandala with its nine superposed terraces was dismantled into 1.6 million blocks?

Miles of bas-reliefs

The operation, which began under the aegis of Unesco in 1973, did not succeed until ten years later. Borobudur collapsed under the weight of centuries and foundations undermined by infiltration. Here everything refers to the cosmos and the 9, the number of achievement: the terraces, the 72 openwork stupas (7+2), the 432 niches for the Buddhas (4+3+2).

Several kilometers of carved panels represent the sacred history and daily life, so close to current conditions. A visit to a village introduces you to the riches of this volcanic land. Everything grows: vanilla, pepper, manioc, green oranges, papayas. Then comes the time for weaving from pandanus stems. The day ends with a refreshing tea and the more or less harmonious sounds of gamelan, the typical orchestra based on metallophones (xylophones with metal blades).

With the Hindu triad

On leaving the city, the temples of Prambanan seem to be the Hinduists’ response to the splendor of Borobudur. Here, no single temple, but hundreds, eaten away by vegetation and earthquakes. The main ensemble dedicated to the Shiva, Brahma, Vishnu triad recalls Angkor’s most beautiful achievements.

At nightfall, stone arrows pierce the sky while the gods remain on the lookout in their chapels. Around the terraces of the three main temples, it is a debauchery of bas-reliefs that a week would hardly be enough to detail. Head east towards Bromo, star of the 17 active Javanese volcanoes. As in Borobudur, it is necessary to get up at dawn to see the sun’s rays dissipate the mists and gradually illuminate the lunar plain and volcanic cones.

Volcanoes and pumice stones

If from the lookout, the Bromo seems modest, the effort to reach it is not, through a sea of black sand, strewn with pumice stones and after a good climb. At the edge of the crater, fumaroles hypnotize and leave a bitter taste in the mouth.

Hindus worship the volcano and throw flowers as an offering. There is nothing to stop Muslims from doing the same. Fanaticism may have its followers, but respect and animistic syncretism remain the norm in the largest Islamic country. Those who are fascinated by volcanoes will continue towards Kawah Ijen with its lake of turquoise acid and its sulfur carriers. The others will have a hard time resisting the call of Balinese beaches and sirens.

Why do you want to go to Mauritius?

Mauritius is a small piece of land lost in the Indian Ocean, a small island that could be described as a miniature world: 45 km wide (West to East) and 65 km long (North to South), a 320 km coastline, a new international airport, and a capital where people speak English, French, Creole and many other languages.

A small jewel of the Indian Ocean, Mauritius has an ideal climate with breathtaking landscapes. In Mauritius, you can gild yourself on the magnificent white sand beaches that surround the coast for 320 km, or discover the azure lagoon and its coral reef where anglers canoe. When you advance inland, you find out the second face of the island: its pronounced relief, where you can discover many mountains, fresh waterfalls, and ancient dormant volcano. The inland invites you to explore new and exhilarating colors and scents. The mixed population, a mixture of Europe, Africa, and Asia, will surprise you with its “joie de vivre,” supported by the many Indo-Mauritian festivals.

Here are some good reasons for taking a trip to Mauritius.

Scuba diving

If you are a scuba diver, you may already know this, but we cannot talk about Mauritius without praising the charms of diving in Mauritius: dives for all levels and skills, warm waters, training for beginners or those looking to reach the instructor, there is something for everyone all tastes around the island.

Tour the beaches in Mauritius

The beaches are beautiful, long, and elegant, ideal for sunbathing and relaxing. Drop the iPhone; there are so many things to observe and discover on a beach in Mauritius. Just the clumsy ballet of Mauritian families coming to picnic on the beach on Sundays is a scene to see, the Hindu rituals where women come to place flower offerings on the surface of the lagoon. The beaches are all around the island; you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting your next tanning target.

Mix with the Mauritian population

Mauritius is a multicultural nation, try to set your trip with one of the country’s many religious holidays. Hindu holidays are very rich in colors, flavors, aromas, and sounds (perfect time to take pretty souvenirs in pictures). Getting in touch with Mauritians is straightforward.

Try to get into Creole and don’t be surprised when you return home when you spontaneously let an “ayo” or “marie bon” escape. You will thus discover the strong influence of the French colonial period through the expressions and vocabulary of Creole.

It is by mixing you with the Mauritians that they will tell you where the unique sites are, the excursions to do, the cheap and tasty restaurants, the ones they frequent when they can. Strong is to bet that you will end up on a Sunday on a public beach to share a picnic and a moment of intense conviviality.

Elisa and Max, professional globe-trotters

In 2013, Elisa Detrez and Max Coquard got the best job in the world in Australia. They come back from this adventure with a super-well-put together book, which just came out. They are promoting it this week end in Lyon (France) through a public meeting.

She was born in the Jura (France North East); he was born in Tarare. She worked in tourism; he worked in photography. They met in Paris, in a studio, during a fashion shoot. That was in 2010. Elisa Detrez and Max Coquard never left each other again. Maybe their names mean something to you. In 2013, they got the best job in the world with the Australian National Tourist Board, hitting some 330,000 candidates from 196 countries at the post. Not bad, isn’t it?

“But at first it was just for one person,” says Elisa. That was my delusion. I’ve always loved speaking foreign languages. I had lived in New Zealand, Germany, Spain. I’d been dreaming of Australia since I was 6: the koalas, Uluru… Max was the man in the shadows, the little photo/video genius. The one that allowed him to make a 30-second clip so effective, that he made him pass the preselections.

From stage to stage, Elisa takes on the trophy. Even better, she negotiates the arrival of her partner in the adventure. In August 2013, they flew to Brisbane, Queensland. In front of them, 100 000 dollars and six months of a dream to embrace the wonders of the island-continent, from East to West, from North to South… and to make them known to the largest number of people.

From salon to salon, from contact to contact, Elisa and Max finally convince. Today their bosses, they travel around France and the world, in search of good plans, essentials, unusual places… according to an economic model that works. With the Net, people have access to a lot of information. We advise them, we inform them. It happens, for example, that some people take inspiration from our travels for their honeymoon! It’s sharing the experience.”

Nomads, they are no less sedentary. Next month, they will settle permanently in Lyon. We need a place to relax, recharge our batteries, work. You can’t imagine the time spent editing videos, processing, choosing photos, writing. To do what you do, you have to be passionate. Despite a busy schedule, Elisa and Max have finally managed to put their Australian adventures on paper, where it all started (read more).

This Wednesday, they will be in Lyon for an evening of meetings and exchanges around this book. Not to be missed.

A new type of themed trip offers to “get lost” in the jungle.

jungle fever

People looking for adventure can now test their determination with a new type of theme trip. The theme in question?
Survival in hostile environments. Travellers are being sent to remote parts of the world and have to find their way out.

swimming with crocs6Designed by the custom-made travel agency Black Tomato, this itinerary, entitled “Get Lost,” is not for everyone.
If you are a fan of fresh air, addicted to adrenaline and with a strong personality, you are part of the target market! On the other hand, if you fear change and open spaces, if you are afflicted with a list of phobias as long as your arm and if you need all the modern comforts, the trip is probably not for you.

A secret destination kept secret until arrival

The programme is not designed for small children. The proposed places are hostile and offer little reference points: jungle, pole, desert, mountain, wild coast, etc. The idea is to enable people saturated by social networks, and under pressure in the face of the demands of daily life, to disconnect and discover their “inner steel.”

These very special travelers are only able to choose the type of environment they want to explore, but their exact destination is kept secret until they arrive. People who are ready for anything can even rely on the Black Tomato agency’s wheel of a chance decision.

These tourists have to tap into their resources.

jungle feverTo begin with, travelers must complete a questionnaire and are referred to a travel expert to determine how much they want to feel “lost” and what personal goals they want to achieve. If necessary, they follow specific training sessions. They arrive at their destination via a private route and are then given the necessary equipment to make a successful shipment.

Under the remote surveillance of a task force that remains hidden, and thanks to offline navigation technology, these extreme tourists are forced to tap into their resources, intelligence, and survival instincts to reach a series of crossing points. It is possible to register as a group or alone.

My recent visit to Northern Canada

rocky-mountaineer-train-next-to-river

map-of-canada-and-parksMy visit to the Northern part of Canada was by far one of the best entertainment trips I have ever been to across the world. Part of my hobbies and goals in life is to visit various destinations all over the world and to meet new people and learn new ways of life as well. To be honest being from British Columbia I had never ventured farther up than Prince George…

To be specific, North Canada was a good choice for national park tourism since the Country is well known for its diversity when it comes to animal life and ecosystems as well. Apart from their excellent weather, citizens, and food, their national parks are also one of the hidden treasures that one may discover when visiting the country. I was fascinated by all the different biodiversity in animals and I was even able to capture the footage on my high-tech handheld devices.

How I used my drone

To be specific, I recently purchased a drone, which I have been using to capture footage and just having fun when at home. I was not really in full compliance with the local regulations to be honest but managed to get a few good shots from my flight sessions.

This thing comes with a broad spectrum of design features that makes it ideal for capturing footage in various strategic locations. I decided to carry mine along on my trip to Canada, and I was simply amazed by the excellent functionality that this thing had to offer for my unique drone vidéo 4k footage capturing needs. The image quality was clear, and I was even able to upload the captured footage later on to my computer for access. The added benefit was that I did not need to change the batteries for new one, in fact, all I needed to do was to place the device in an electrical socket for additional power.

What I enjoyed in the tour

From the sandy beaches, glacial lakes, lush vegetation and the pristine weather, I was able to encounter these types of scenarios first hand, and I was even able to capture the footage on camera as well. As a student, its was not only important to me that I record the events on live camera, but it was also important that I document it in writing as well.

The Rocky Mountains, the untamed wilderness and the immense biodiversity that is available in the country, this was truly one of the most exciting moments in life. Not only did I get to see some of the highly rated ecosystems and environments in the world, but I also got the opportunity to learn a lot from y entire journey as a student when visiting North Canada National Parks.

On top of that, a significant portion of my time in the area was documented using my drone that comes with a high-powered camera along with excellent aerodynamic functionalities as well. For this reason, I have a full diary of my entire activities during my visit to the various national parks in Canada, and I enjoyed myself during the tour. Canada has excellent a unique ecosystem and environment as well, thereby making it one of the most famous travel destinations for students who want to learn more about the country.

My Passion for Outdoors and Camping Tents

Amazing sky at night when sleepign outdoors

There are all kinds of hobbies out there that people enjoy. One of the most popular is going camping and it is one of my favorite. Naturally as a Canadian, we have plenty of great outdoor spots we can enjoy anytime of the year. Whether being used for team-building, building a bond between family members, on vacation, or just being an excuse to reconnect with nature, many people like going camping. One of the most important items to take for the trip is the tent. However, not all tents are equal. There are many different types and kinds of various needs and environments. Keep reading to learn more about them so that you can find the best tent for you.

mountain biking breakSome tents are available for different numbers of people. Whether you are going camping alone, taking the a few friends or even taking a huge family, there is a tent out there that can fit your needs easily. You can find one that is just for one person. You can also find them for multiple people, such as 2-, 3-, and even up to 10-person tents. You can also get the bigger tents even if it’s just you or a few people if you need extra storage for your supplies.

Materials are also important, as the different types of tents are made with different materials that offer various types of protection. Polyester, canvas, and nylon are some of the most popular. Polyester works best in prolonged sunny areas, canvas is the heaviest and most durable, and nylon is the lightest for mild climates.

There are different shapes available, too. One of the most popular is the dome shape because they are easy to assemble and disassemble thanks to their often flexible poles. You can find these as small as 2-person size all the way up to 9-person size.

Square cabin tents are also a popular choice for outdoor trips. They are one of the best options for base and established campgrounds. This simple design is a very comfortable option due to its high ceilings, vertical walls, and rigid structure. Due to the extra space for everything from cots to chairs, they are perfect for large group or family trips.

bonfire in the outdoorsHoop tents are also a pretty attractive option for a couple of reasons. While putting them up requires pegs and knots, the spacious interior and headroom can be worth it. The arched shape outside also allows rain and snow to fall off.

If it is assembled correctly, the tunnel tent is one of the most reliable options for a camping trip. This one has poles that run its entire length. It also offers a lot of headroom and space inside. The main durability and construction of this tent are to be pitched if there are sudden high winds.

As you can see, there are many options when it comes to finding your ideal camping tent. You need to consider the type of material, the number of people going on the trip, along with how many supplies you plan on bringing, where you plan to camp, and the type of climate you can expect where you camp.
For the latest news and reviews on camping tents, make sure you follow What Camping Tent on Facebook or on their Twitter page. Mark is a really nice guy and he can be trusted when it comes to tents!

Road Trip to Naples and the surrounding area

This trip, I was dreaming for years. Pompei. Positano. Procida. Ravello. Capri. Amalfi. Napoli… The simple pronunciation of these syllables made me the effect of a map pastries in a tea room. If you followed me on Instagram these fifteen days, you know that my stay in Italy has been beyond my expectations. I filled scents of glycine, orange blossom, Citron, of olive oil, and pines. I put the blue in my retina for the next six months. And pastels washed by the foam of the waves and the Sun at its zenith.

An idyllic journey which I will deliver each step in the coming days. You then call the itinerary of your dreams by skipping some places either by lengthening the journey here or there. Radius hotel, affordable places with nights has mixed in five breathtaking stars. We have not stayed in all luxury hotels we visited. Sometimes, it there had just lunch or taking a drink. And I will try to offer to you at every stage, cheaper alternatives. This trip, we can do bag backpack and homestay. I feel too old for it and probably too snobbish I admit (again a sign of advanced age I imagine). So I preferred to save on flight booking a Paris-Naples via Easy Jet for several months in advance. It allowed us to grill the blue card for a few nights in hotels of crazy.
